I’m Rachael, the inquisitive creator of Fitzonomics. I’m a Herefordshire-based economics and decision-making blogger, freelance writer, finance geek and mummy to two young girls.
I’ve always had a thing for economics, ever since I was little. I was one of those kids who continually ask ‘but why?‘ at any given opportunity… [Sorry, Mum.] But there’s something about fully understanding information and the logic of good decision making that’s pretty addictive. Even when you’re young.
I originally trained as a scientist at University. In Biochemistry of all things. I love the practical nature of natural sciences – working out what you want to do, how you’re going to do it, and with what. And then studying the results, asking yourself what they mean, then testing, adjusting and examining the effects (I told you I’m a geek…).
Later on, I joined the Army. It was at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, I was introduced to the British Army’s way of decision making – the Combat Estimate.
The Estimate is a logical thinking process that can be used in any situation, not just in battle. It focuses your thinking on the effects you want to achieve in any situation and then guides you through the stages needed to make it happen. It’s a simply fantastic mental tool – it works – and it helped me with the more strategic thinking in my Master’s degree after I left the Army.
I studied for an MBA. My teacher, a passionate economist, introduced me to the concept of economics, not as a subject in itself, but as a thinking tool. It made me realise that you can have the best intentions, but if you don’t understand how the world works, your decisions can have terrible consequences.
To misquote legendary scientist Isaac Newton, every action has a reaction. And understanding why this reaction happens is the basis of both economics and the Estimate thinking process. Together, they make a powerful mental tool that helps us achieve the clarity needed to deal with a hectic world.
As a mum, this helps me immensely every single day. Without fail.
I’m so passionate about the benefits of good decision making that I want to share it all with you. So, I created my blog, Fitzonomics – decision making for mums.
I’m sooooo chuffed you’ve found it. Thank you for joining me here!
